Garment Dye

Greige fabric cut and sewn into garments, then dyed in the garment form.

Garment on Hanger

(GOH) A hanging packaging shipping type.

Garment Twist (Torquing)

A rotation, usually lateral, between panels of a garment resulting from the release of latent stresses during laundering of the woven or knitted fabric forming the garment. Twist may also be referred to as torque or spiraling.

Garment Wash

Dyed goods washed to tone down color, provide a distressed or weathered look, seam abrasion, or make fabric softer.

Gauge

In knitting, the number of needles (wales) per inch on the knitting machine (rather than the number of stitches per inch on the knitted textile). Some full fashioned knitting equipment still indicates the gauge as needles per 1-1/2”. The more needles-per-inch indicates the fineness of the knitted fabric.

Grade Rule

A standard set of increases or decreases for various body or garment measurements within a size range. This can be established or modified by the designer, the contractor or the retailer and usually reflects their standard “fit” for their customer.

Grading

Proportionately increasing or decreasing the dimensions of all the parts of a sample/proto/model garment according to the size ranges in a style intended for production. Grading is a significant step in garment production, in order to maintain proper fit in the full range of sizes, as well as determining the cutting layout (marker) for the fabric and trims.

Grain

As applies to woven fabrics: Straight Grain - Threads running down the length of the fabric and parallel to the selvage. Cross Grain - Across the width of the fabric. Bias - Diagonally across the fabric at a 45 degree angle. Off Grain - Not aligned with the Straight Grain or the grain indicated for the pattern piece.

Greige (Grey) Goods

Unfinished or “loom state” textiles, coming from a mill or knitter. Various “finishing” procedures follow like bleaching, dyeing, printing, brushing, etc.

Greige Goods

Knitted or woven cloth that has not received any dry or wet finishing such as bleaching, dyeing or printing.
