Yarn Count

The size of a given yarn and the number of “ends” (strands) plied together in spinning. This is usually given as a fraction such as 2/20. There are several “count systems” but NM (New Metric) is gaining favor as a universal system that deals in the diameter of yarn based on a set length.

Yarn Dyed

A knitted or woven textile that uses yarns dyed prior to construction. Usually this is done to create various patterns or designs during the actual knitting or weaving, as in: jacquards, stripes, plaids and dobbies.

Yield

Amount of fabric (yardage) used to cut one garment, or, when referring to knit fabric, yield = weight of fabric. The yield is used as a costing factor.
